BWFC 1-2 Derby County
19-08-2017 MoM: Gary Madine
In the matchday programme there was a page on Derby's threats and the average times of scoring and conceding of both sides. Wanderers most likely to concede? First 20 minutes. Derby most likely to score? First 20 minutes. Derby's biggest threat? Dave Nugent. So, in a majorly simplistic tactical innovation; mark Nugent early on.
20 minutes in, Bolton 0-2 Derby, Nugent brace. Now, surely this is just Derby blowing us away? Horrific defending. Genuinely, the first goal was just stationary however that second goal is my key issue. There was a pedestrian speed to Derby's passing across the middle of the park with no intense pressing. Then, 2 balls through the lines, some motionless players already in awkward body positions to track (Andy Taylor and Mark Beevers) and Vydra crosses into an untracked, unmarkes Dave Nugent once again to slot home.
Gary Madine got a stoppage time consolation after a half of endeavour and better organisation, the damage had been done.
The thing that bothers me the most is the self-infliction. Our two home defeats are to two genuinely good sides. However, the five goals we've conceded are all seriously preventable. Derby have 15 players with international caps, losing to them is no disgrace. Bolton aren't technically better than many teams, we have to make them get the better us and so fart this season, we've allowed them to beat us fairly comfortably. We're on the wrong end of the gulf in ability however they aren't the reasons we have lost and that gives some encouragement as well as being massively infuriating.
Friday night sees a trip to Hull. Tigers are without Abel Hernandez and possibly the targeted Sam Clucas. Hull have a genuinely good manager and are coming off the back of a poor 2-1 defeat at QPR.
There is a possible expectancy that Bolton's style suits sides like Derby, Hull, Boro as we play defensively with with a long-ball counter outlet. The loss of Sammy Ameobi and Parkinson's Buckley resistance has contributed to that not being the case. However, it has to click at some point...Friday?
